It was kind of bothersome how everybody had different blog services and the only way to comment was by creating an account. I have blog accounts for virtually every major service now. And I too struggled with the abstinence. I think a lot of us are very internet savvy people who know how to utilize the net. But because of this, I think we all learned a new lesson from the blog assignments which forced us out of our comfort zone.

Yeah the abstinence assignment was brutal. All of my activities and life seem to be structured around the computer and internet. It’s my source of information for just about everything. Without the internet I felt like everything came to a screeching halt and my productivity plummeted. It’s truly amazing just how reliant we have become on technology and the internet.

Great post!

Wow, this is the third blog I've read where someone got ripped off by the OSU thing. I can't believe so many people were affected by that, including myself. Great post and thanks for shaing your frustrating experiences. -sam paul

Wow! All I can say is me too. I have been hacked twice this year and all of my card info was stolen. It seems like the internet technology just keeps expanding and we cannot keep up with our every growing need for personal security over our identities and our lives. I just watched that movie Untraceable...that was pretty freaky. Now that your information has been compromised do you feel more prepared to secure your information or do you feel as though it is never "fully" secured?

"And in the spirit of evaluating, my least favorite was the abstinence exercise! When you have such an AMAZING tool as the Internet, who wants to abstain from it?!?!"

That is so funny! I too had a hard time with this particular exercise, but I thought it taught a great lesson. I was really surprised at how quickly this course went by. I had never taken a summer course at OSU before, so this was new to me. I too said that I would recommend it to anyone, because it was fun, interesting, and caused me to really think about the technology that I use everyday. I do not really think that I was doing that before, I really took it for granted. Thanks for your post and I hope you have a good rest of your summer too.

I know how you feel. I have had my account comprimised twice. The first was via an online purchase that I made and the second was via the OSU bookstore. You put your trust in these companies to secure your information but there are always those bad apples. Luckly My bank shut my account almost immediatly.Unfortuntly I was in the process of paying for my morning coffee when they shut it down. It was embarrasing. Sometimes I think technology is more of a hinerance than a convience. You also have to watch out when you run your debit card as a credit. the machine at my wifes work prints your entire card number on the recipt and they have to print it twice, so you never know who has your number

Hey Amber,
Funny about your grandfather. My grandmother is the same exact way. My husband is also self employed and uses the internet religiously. He has a smart phone that is with him at all times. It sits at his night stand while we are sleeping, and everytime he gets an email the phone vibrates. I've gotten used to the machine's intrusion on every aspect of my life, and I'm sure my husband doesn't even notice it anymore. Funny how we adapt to these things.

"Being newly graduated and working full-time in Accounting, she says that she couldn’t imagine life without the Internet."--

Isn't that the truth! It is like we are conditioned by our circumstances to NEED the technology. I feel the exact same way because all of my classes are online. I never get away unless I take a forced abstinence like we did for the project earlier in this course. My subject in the 18-35 category also felt the same way.

These days, to get a good job, you have to be comfortable with navigating the new technology including the internet. Do you feel like this technology makes your life better or worse? It is a toss up for me. I love that I can stay at home with my child and still finish school. Did you find that you could personally relate to any of your interview subjects? For instance, did you have more in common with one over another? Thanks for your post!

I think that one of the best things about virtual communities is its ability to provide information to anyone in the world on any given topic. Who would have ever thought that there was actually a group that discusses coupons and how to save money? Communities like this can be very resourceful and in your example will even help keep money in your pocket.

I love your comments about having to log-in every time and create new usernames and passwords for every account. It is exhausting and difficult to keep track of. I have just been cleaning house lately deleting many accounts I no longer visit. They email you, probably even put you on spam lists, even when the promise they don’t. I even had one community SOMEHOW send an email to everyone in my address book! How does that happen? I must not have read the small print somewhere. This was especially disconcerting to me because it was a mom site, and it went to my friends that don’t have kids and even those going through fertility issues (as I once did too). To say the least, I was embarrassed and had to send another massive email to everyone in my address book to apologize. I deleted that account as soon as possible.

Getting the “approval” is rough. I feel like I’m joining a cult! But, I moderate a group and you can get some scary folks sometimes.
Keeping up with these boards can sometimes be a full-time job. I don’t understand who has time to commit to some of these boards, much less multiple boards. Most boards I’m on, I’ve changed my settings to a “daily digest” instead of individual emails to avoid the excitement of thinking I’m getting a real email every time I hear that little “ding”.

Doesn’t it sometimes feel like you’re in an alternate universe? All these strangers sharing information and requesting information – and you may never meet any of them.
